Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

Dr. Rohe has personally trained with the founder of TRT, Dr. Pawell Jastreboff, in order to deliver the exact standard of care required for TRT to work. To understand TRT fully, let’s look at the two components of tinnitus:

  • The actual sound – usually perceived as a ringing sound, but can also be perceived as a hissing, buzzing, whistling, clicking, or swooshing sound
  • The emotional reaction – the perception of the character of the sound, its loudness level, and its impact on everyday life

The effective treatment of tinnitus requires addressing both of these components through a combination of external sound therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), which both combine to create the essence of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

CBT is designed to focus on the present and is ideal for the more time-limited, and more problem-solving oriented patients. Much of what the patient does is “solve” the current problem – their reaction to tinnitus, which is usually anxiety, fear, or stress. As part of practicing CBT to address their tinnitus, patients learn specific cognitive skills that they can use for the rest of their lives that involve identifying distorted thinking, modifying beliefs and reactions, practicing different ways of relating to others, and changing behaviors

Sound Therapy

Sound therapy for Tinnitus is a program that is designed to change the patterns in the neuronal networks and reduce the distressing symptoms of tinnitus, including loudness and annoyance.

The brain’s auditory cortex has an organizational structure according to the frequency or pitch of sounds that it perceives, ranging from low to high pitches. Sound therapy is designed to disrupt this synchronization by introducing therapeutic and matched tones to the user. This pitch-matching process works in cooperation with the brain to target the therapy to the hyperactive region in the auditory cortex.
